Men's Soccer Blanked at Conn College

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision at Connecticut College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Billy Hawkey sandwiched a pair of goals around an assist to lead the Camels to a convincing win in their home opener. Ibrahim Mutala chipped in with two assists for Connecticut College.

Ryland Hormel, Pat Devlin, Matthew Bitchell and Weller Hlinomaz all contributed with goals for the Camels, who piled up 31 shots in the offensive uprising. Max Nichols earned the shutout, logging the full 90 minutes without having to record a save for the hosts.

Junior Ramazan Sinani turned in a gutsy performance in the start for the Mariners, turning aside 10 Camel shots with some nice footwork in 84 minutes of action. Chad Harshbarger made two saves in the closing six minutes of action for the visitors.

The Camels opened the scoring in the 24th minute of action. Hawkey delivered a through ball down the middle of the box and Hormel chipped it in for what would prove to be the game-winner.

But just 1:11 later, the Camels were on the board again. Doug Garabedian rifled a cross from near the left sideline and Hawkey was able to one-time it past Sinani to take the 2-0 advantage.

Sinani did what he could to keep the Mariners in the game. With 10:19 left, Sinani made a punch save on a 10-yard blast off the leg of Hawkey. Later on with 2:15 to go in the half, Kevin O'Brien tested Sinani with a nice header, but the goalie was able to come away with the save to keep it a 2-0 game at the break.

But in the second stanza, the Camels kept the pressure on. Mutala assisted Hawkey for his second goal of the day in the 53rd minute. Then, in the 64th minute, Devlin unloaded with a bomb from the 18 yard line to put the game out of reach.

The Camels tacked on two more scores to close out the 6-0 triumph. Connecticut College held a 10-to-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Mitchell (0-2-0 overall) will return to action at home against Springfield College on Friday, September 6 at 4 p.m.
