Late Goals Sink Men's Soccer at Newbury

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Newbury College men's soccer team handed Mitchell College its first conference loss of the season, winning 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon on the strength of a pair of late goals.

Ethan Forrest, who registered his team-leading sixth and seventh goals of the season, recorded the game winner with three minutes remaining in regulation.

Goalkeeper Cody Nash-Gibney was outstanding in net for the Nighthawks. Midway through the first half, the Vermont native made a leaping grab to deny Mitchell junior Frank Williams and keep the game scoreless. Late in the period, the Nighthawks defensive line came up big once again and knocked freshman Julian Gordon's shot wide to send the game into halftime tied at 0-0.

When the teams returned to the pitch at the start of the second period, the Nighthawks came out with a renewed sense of energy, outshooting the Mariners 14-5 in the stanza. Junior goalkeeper Ramazan Sinani valiantly fought off the Nighthawk attackers, tallying five of his eight saves in the half before Forrest found the back of the net in the 87th minute to break up the stalemate.

Rodriquez Pierre connected with Forrest in the middle of the field, and Forrest snuck the ball past Sinani from five yards out. Two minutes later, Pierre connected with the East Bridgewater native again in front of the net to give the Nighthawks an insurance goal.

Newbury sits atop the NECC standings at 4-1-0 and 6-8-0 overall while Mitchell fell to 3-1-0 and 5-9-0 overall.

The Mariners will be back in action on Saturday, October 19 at home against Becker College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
