Men's Soccer Opens Season with Win at Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass.—The Mitchell College men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to come away with a 2-0 victory at Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon at AMCAT Field in the season opener for both squads.

After a scoreless first half, the Mariners broke through in the 55th minute as senior Jordan Derosier scored on a header. Positioned in front of the net, Derosier finished off a corner kick served up by classmate Taylor Surette that beat Anna Maria goalkeeper Patrick Thornberg.

Nearly 22 minutes later, the Mitchell squad was granted a free kick following an AMCAT foul. Senior Frank Williams stepped up and buried the direct shot from 45 yards out to make it a 2-0 game.

The AMCATS' best opportunity to score came minutes after Mitchell's first goal, as Christopher Mattioli and John Isperduli peppered back-to-back shots on net seconds apart, but senior goalkeeper Ramazan Sinani stopped both shots en route to the shutout victory.

Sinani totaled nine saves on the afternoon to record his seventh career clean sheet. Thornberg finished with five stops for the AMCATS, who were outshot 20-16 overall but held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Mitchell (1-0-0 overall) will next host Connecticut College on Wednesday, September 3 at 4 p.m.
