Men's Soccer Falls 3-0 to Albertus Magnus

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Albertus Magnus College came away with a 3-0 victory over Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference men's soccer match-up at Alumni Field.

Alexis Garcia netted a pair of goals to lead the Falcons, but it was an early tally from Matt Stoll that went down as the game winner. Griffin Volta made four saves in goal as Albertus Magnus improved to 6-1-2 overall.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard quickly, as Stoll found the back of the net just 1:16 into the contest. A Mitchell foul yielded a free kick from midfield, and Albertus Magnus played a deep ball into the box that nearly went untouched before being cleared away at the goal line by a defender. The ball popped out to Stoll at the top of the 18, and he volleyed it out of mid-air and sent a rocket just under the crossbar.

Neither side scored in the remainder of the first half, though the Falcons added to their lead early in the second stanza. Stoll got things started with a pass up the right side, and Lindsley Barrett beat Mitchell keeper Ramazan Sinani to the ball and flicked a pass across the field. Garcia was waiting for the pass and had an easy look at a wide open net.

Garcia tacked on his second goal in the 82nd minute, finishing off a corner served up by Barrett. The pair of scores increased Garcia's team-leading goal total to 10 on the season.

Mitchell's best opportunity to score came in the 87th minute when David Pegnataro took a sliding shot in the box but was denied by Volta. Sinani, who faced 15 shots in the contest, finished with eight saves.

Mitchell (3-4-1 overall) will next host Daniel Webster College on Saturday, September 27 at 2:30 p.m. Albertus Magnus returns to action at home against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
