Strong Second Half Pushes Mount Ida Past Men's Soccer

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College scored four goals in the second half to break open a non-conference men's soccer game against Mitchell College, securing a 5-1 win over the Mariners on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

Three Mustangs netted their first collegiate goals, while Carlos Martinez scored twice and Jordain Williams added two assists. Mount Ida improved to 2-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 at home.

The eventual game winner came from Alexi Flores and broke a 1-1 halftime tie just two minutes into the second stanza. Flores intercepted a pass from the Mariners defense and slotted past sophomore goalie Romer Ochoa, who made nine saves in defeat for Mitchell.

Martinez, who now has a team-high three goals, began his night with a score at the 18:00 mark of the first half. He gave Mount Ida the lead when he broke into the box and brilliantly finished to Ochoa's left after creating space for himself.

Mitchell freshman Jevaughn McBean also notched his first career tally to tie the game at the 36:23 mark. McBean shook off the Mustang defense and then blasted a shot to the far post that froze Mount Ida goalie William Planey, who made a pair of saves to earn the win in his collegiate debut between the pipes.

Martinez doubled his account, and the Mount Ida lead, in the 54th minute, chesting down a cross from Williams and easily smashing the ball into a gaping net. The teams played over a half hour of goalless soccer before Nicholas Elkins and Cody Seel put the icing on the win with their milestone goals. Elkins had a rip at the net from 20 yards out and his shot found the post and ricocheted the right way for the Mustangs. Two minutes later, Seel was played in alone by Williams, took two touches and lofted the ball over the head of Ochoa who had come out to cut off the angle.

Mount Ida enjoyed a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks and a 29-7 edge in shots, including a 14-3 lead in shots on goal.

Mitchell (1-3-1 overall) travels to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. for a non-conference affair.
