Coast Guard Tops Men's Soccer

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team suffered a 6-0 setback at Coast Guard Academy in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

Coast Guard's Ryan Dandan scored a goal and added two assist as six different players scored for the Bears the win. CGA improved to 3-7-0 on the year and has won two in a row while Mitchell dropped to 3-5-1 on the season.

The Bears let little time slip by as Dandan took a pass from Lukas Benedetto and slotted a shot underneath sophomore goalkeeper Romer Ochoa for his first goal of the year 35 seconds into the game. Just under two minutes later off a Coast Guard corner, Kyle Phillips directed a shot on goal that was turned away by Ochoa, but Jason Kingsley stepped up and finished off his first goal of season to give the Bears a 2-0 lead 2:45 into the match.

At the 16:04 mark Garrett Magill split two Mitchell defenders with a pass to Dandan towards the Mariners end line. Dandan continued to dribble to the touch line before he cut a cross back to Magill, who was in the center of the box. Magill fired a shot one time for his first collegiate goal.

Coast Guard continued to press in the first half as Magill took a corner later in the period from the left side. His cross found Phillips on the back post who sent a header towards goal only to be denied by the woodwork and cleared out by the Mitchell defense.

CGA's dominance continuedin the second half as Benedetto beat Ochoa with a shot but the ball deflected off the post. Ricky Davies came charging in and one-timed the rebound into the back of the net for his first goal of the season 49:31 into the game.

Dandan notched his second assist of the game in the 56th minute as he beat a Mariners defender with a nutmeg and then found Benedetto with a pass in front of the goal. Benedetto fired a shot on goal for his team-leading third goal of the season.

Finishing off the scoring on the night was Luke Telang, who dribbled into the box from the left side and fired a shot on goal. Ochoa was able to get his body in front of the ball initially, but the ball ricocheted off the goalkeeper and spun into the back of the net for Telang's second goal of the season.

William Bragaw earned the win in goal and combined with Marshall Grant for the shutout as they faced nine shots. Bragaw improved to 2-3 on the year. Ochoa faced 21 shots (10 on goal) and made four saves.

Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College on Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m.
