Early Goal Pushes Newbury Past Men's Soccer

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College men's soccer team defeated Mitchell College, 1-0, in New England Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday evening.

Forward Ethan Forrest guided the Nighthawks to their fifth conference win with his fourth goal of the season. The loss was Mitchell's first in league play and snapped a four-game winning streak.

Newbury set the tone early, controlling the majority of the first half. Keeping the ball in Mitchell territory, the Nighthawks struck quickly with consecutive shots by Forrest, Emmett Dixon, Mario Herrera and German Canales. Despite the early barrage, the Mitchell defense stayed tough to keep it scoreless.

In the 12th minute the tandem of Forrest and Canales broke the stalemate. Canales connected with Forrest through the middle of the field, and after beating his defender the latter buried a shot into the back of the net for the lone score of the contest.

The Nighthawks took the 1-0 advantage into the break and stayed alert defensively in the second stanza. Greg Brooks and Nick Valdario gave the Nighthawks a few opportunities to add an insurance goal but came up empty.

However, the one goal was all the Nighthawks needed as goalkeeper Jarrod Smith picked up his seventh victory of the year. Mitchell sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Drake made five saves in the loss.

The Mariners (7-6-1 overall, 4-1-0 NECC) return to action at Regis College on Saturday, October 24 at 1 p.m.
