Men's Soccer Stumbles at Conn College

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's soccer team suffered an 8-1 setback to crosstown rival Connecticut College on Tuesday afternoon at Freeman Field.

The Camels found the back of the net three times in a span of 3:16 during the first half and never looked back. Conn expanded the lead to 7-0 before the Mariners got on the scoreboard thanks to a converted penalty kick by Eduardo Tineo in the 80th minute.

Liam Noonan gave Conn the early lead with a goal in the 16th minute. Ben Highton followed 87 seconds later to make it 2-0, and Matt Butera added a score in the 19th minute to put the Camels on top by three. A goal by Evan Roy in the 38th minute capped the first-half scoring as Conn took the 4-0 lead into the break.

Christian Murphy scored on a diving header in the 49th minute as the Camels continued their attack in the second half. Ben Manoogian later tallied back-to-back goals just under five minutes apart to expand the lead to 7-0.

Mitchell kept at it and eventually broke through with just over 10 minutes to play. Tineo was in the box when he was taken down and a penalty kick was awareded. He calmly stepped up and finished into the right corner for his first collegiate goal.

Seth Strader finished with a pair of saves in goal for the Mariners. Conn's A.J. Marcucci saw the majority of action in net and made two saves to record the win.

Mitchell (0-1-1 overall) will next host Worcester State University on Saturday, September 9 at 2:30 p.m.
