Men's Soccer Gets First Conference Win vs. SVC

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College scored three goals in the second half en route to a 4-1 victory over Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference men's soccer action at Alumni Field.

The four goals marked a season high for the Mariners, who improved to 2-5-1 overall (1-1-0 NECC). Jarron Walter, Andrew Storton and Brayan Mora all found the back of the net in a contest that saw Mitchell hold a 32-10 edge in total shots.

Walter provided the only goal of the first half, scoring off a header just 6:31 into the contest. Christian Urena served up a ball from the right side of the box that found Walter at the far post for his first tally of the season.

Leading 1-0 at the half, Mitchell quickly upped the margin to three with a pair of goals in the opening 2:11 of the second stanza. The first came courtesy of a SVC defender who was trying to clear away a corner kick but put the ball into his own net. Just over a minute later, Storton added to the lead by converting on a penalty kick, driving his attempt into the lower-right corner to increase his team-leading goal total to six on the season.

Southern Vermont cut into the deficit in the 51st minute when Jared Lacoste punched in a loose ball that was sitting on the goal line for his team-leading seventh marker of the season.

Mitchell added an insurance goal in the 76th minute when William Ferguson served up a ball from the back line that bounced over the SVC defense and was tracked down by Mora. After eluding the goalie, Mora had a clear path to his first career goal to make it 4-1.

Mitchell goalie Seth Strader finished with three saves in the victory. SVC goalie Dylan Berg turned away a season-high 12 shots.

Mitchell will next play at Montclair State University on Wednesday, October 4 at 7 p.m. Southern Vermont (3-8-0 overall, 1-1-0 NECC) returns to action at Lyndon State College on Tuesday, October 3 at 3:30 p.m.
