Men's Soccer Takes NECC Opener 3-0 Over Southern Vermont

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team opened New England College Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Mariners scored all three goals in the first 28 minutes of the contest. Diego Di Carlantonio got things rolling just 2:04 into the match with his first of the season, and Quinn Outerbridge added a pair of goals later in the stanza. Mitchell goalkeeper Seth Strader stopped a pair of shots to record his first clean sheet of the season.

In the opening minutes of the game, Outerbridge served up a ball from the left side of the box that Di Carlantonio finished off for the early 1-0 advantage. The tally was the first of his collegiate career.

Some nifty passing led to Mitchell's second goal in the 26th minute as Di Carlantonio played a ball out wide to Christian Urena on the left side. Urena quickly redirected the ball to Outerbridge in front of the goal for a clean look that slipped inside the far post.

Just over two minutes later, a throw in from the right sideline resulted in Mitchell's final goal of the day. TJ Condon launched a throw into the center of the box, and Outerbridge headed it home for his team-leading third goal of the season.

The second half failed to yield any serious scoring opportunities, and the Mariners finished with a 12-10 edge in total shots. Southern Vermont goalkeepers Diego Uquillas and Tyler Mackie combined to make four saves in the game.

Mitchell (2-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 NECC) will next play at Old Westbury on Wednesday, September 19 at 4 p.m. Southern Vermont (1-6 overall, 0-1-0 NECC) returns to action at home against SUNY Canton on Sunday, September 16 at 5 p.m.
