Men's Soccer Stumbles at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at SUNY Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon at Panther Park.

Edens Avril scored both goals for the Panthers, who improved to 3-4-0 overall. The loss dropped the Mariners to 2-3-0 on the season.

Old Westbury wasted little time getting on the scoreboard when Avril netted his first marker in the fifth minute. After his initial shot was blocked by a defender, Avril collected the rebound and fired off his first-career game-winning goal past goalie Seth Strader to put Old Westbrook up 1-0. Panther goalie Mike Warren faced three Mitchell shots in the opening stanza and made two saves.

Avril concluded his scoring in the 87th minute, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity after being fouled in the box. The tally gave the Panthers some breathing room for the final minutes of the contest.

Old Westbury held the advantage in shots (23-5), shots on goal (10-2) and corner kicks (4-0). Warren faced five shots to claim his first complete-game shutout on the season. Strader finished with eight saves in defeat.

Mitchell returns to conference play at home against Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, September 22 at noon.
