Men's Soccer Comes Up Short at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College dropped a 2-0 decision at crosstown rival Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday night in non-conference men's soccer action.
 
The Bears netted a pair of goals in the first half and kept the Mariners off the scoreboard to improve to 2-5-2 overall. Greg Burnham scored his second goal of the season while Taka Lendon registered his first career goal. 
 
Mitchell had the first opportunity of the game as Quinn Outerbridge received a cross from the left side with space in the Coast Guard penalty box. Outerbridge touched the service toward goal but it went just wide of the opposite post.
 
The Bears settled in and produced their first goal of the game when Daniel Taglianetti sent in a corner kick from the right side. Burnham rose up in the center of the box and drove a header into the back of the net with 7:36 remaining in the opening half.
 
Coast Guard didn't just settle for the one-goal advantage and kept pushing the in the closing minutes of the half. Griffin Klages played Lendon into the attacking third, who then cut the ball back on two defenders in the penalty area and rifled a shot into the left corner for the 2-0 lead at intermission.
 
Mitchell had the best opportunity of the second half as Chad-Wayne Hopkins headed a free kick toward goal in the 59thminute. His header beat goalkeeper William Bragaw but went off the opposite post and back into play. Bryan Ramos one-timed the rebound but sent it wide and out of play.
 
Bragaw (1-1-1) earned his first win of the season and finished with one save. Mitchell keeper Seth Strader (2-5-0) made four saves while allowing the two goals.
 
Mitchell (2-5-0 overall) will next host Dean College on Saturday, September 29 at 11 a.m.
