Men's Soccer Takes Down Dean

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over Dean College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown at Alumni Field.

All three goals came in the second half, with Bryan Ramos tallying the game winner in the 72nd minute for the Mariners. Mitchell got on the scoreboard first when Daniel Hotaling scored in the 59th minute, but Dean quickly answered back to tie the game on a shot by Felipe Campos in the 66th.

The Mariners improved to 3-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in NECC play. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league action.

After a scoreless first half, the Mariners pushed forward and put one in the back of the net in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Ruben Gomes found Hotaling on the left side of the box for a clean look at his first career goal.

Minutes later, Dean responded as Paulo Corriea threaded a pass from the right side of the box to the far post where Campos was waiting for his second goal of the season. The Bulldogs then continued to pressure the Mitchell goal, with Campos being denied twice in one sequence. Mitchell keeper Seth Strader made the save on the initial shot attempt, and James Shea cleared away the goal line on the second to keep it a 1-1 game.

Mitchell produced the go-ahead goal on its ninth corner kick of the contest. Dylan Thambirasa served up a ball into the box that Ramos brought down with his chest and swept over the goal line for his first collegiate tally.

Strader made the margin stand over the final 18 minutes. Dean's best chance to equalize came in the 74th minute when a Mitchell foul just outside the box yielded a free kick. David Rodriguez placed a strong shot on frame, but Strader made a sprawling stop to his left to keep the Mariners in front.

Mitchell held a 21-9 advantage in total shots and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Strader finished with three saves while Dean goalkeeper Devin Moore recorded eight.

Mitchell will next host Babson University on Wednesday, October 3 at 3:30 p.m. Dean returns to action at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Thursday, October 4 at 7 p.m.
