Late OT Goal Stuns Men's Soccer at Newbury

WESTON, Mass. - In a match that seemed headed for a scoreless draw, Kobe Barnes scored in the 109th minute to give Newbury College a 1-0 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon at Pride Field.

The Nighthawks remain undefeated in conference play and are 3-0 in the league for the first time since 2015. Mitchell dropped to 3-7-0 overall (2-2-0 NECC).

With 1:55 remaining in the second and final extra period, the Newbury offense finally clicked for the game winner. The play started with a ball into the offensive third by Richard Silva. The pass found the feet of Warren Exceus around the top of the box. Exceus slid a short pass to Barnes, who managed to find a pocket of space and struck a beautiful shot into the top-left corner of the goal from 18 yards out.

The goal was the third of the season for Barnes and his first career game winner. Exceus earned his sixth assist of the season and now has at least a point in three consecutive matches.

Few quality opportunities occurred in the 108 minutes on the afternoon. Mitchell's best opportunity came off a corner kick with the ball finding David Hernandez. His strike from about 20 yards out just missed the right side of the goal as the first half came to an end.

Newbury goalkeeper Chris Tran picked up the win and improved to 3-2 this season. Mitchell keeper Seth Strader finished with three saves in the defeat.

Mitchell returns to action at home against Suffolk University on Wednesday, October 10 at 3:30 p.m.
