Cortez Named NECC Rookie of the Week

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Mitchell College junior Julian Cortez was named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the sport of men's soccer, as announced by the league on Monday morning.

Cortez scored a pair of game-winning goals in league action last week to help Mitchell clinch a berth in the upcoming NECC Championship. He scored in the 83rd minute of a 3-1 victory over Becker College in which the Mariners rallied back from a goal down with only 10 men on the field. He also contributed the lone goal in a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Lesley University, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the first half.

It marked the second time this season that Cortez has earned the honor (Sept. 3). In 14 games he has made 11 starts and leads the team with nine points on four goals and one assist.

Mitchell (4-9-1 overall, 3-2-0 NECC) has won its last three games and will close out the regular season at Dean College on Wednesday, October 30 at 3 p.m.
