Late PK Sinks Men's Soccer vs. Albertus Magnus

NEW LONDON, Conn. – A penalty kick in the final minute of regulation sunk the Mitchell College men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 loss to Albertus Magnus College.

Kelvin Cortez buried the PK to give the Falcons the win in their season opener. Garfield Robinson earned the clean sheet in goal, turning away one shot on the afternoon.

Both sides had trouble breaking through for quality opportunities. Midway through the first half, Mitchell goalie Joey Rosa thwarted AMC's best scoring chance of the stanza with a sliding save.

The game grew more contentious in the second half as each team fought to get on the scoreboard. Mitchell's strategy changed in the 84th minute when a player was sent off with a red card, forcing the Mariners to play a man down for the remainder of regulation.

The Falcons took advantage of a late corner kick to cause chaos in the box. After an initial shot hit off the post, the rebound was kicked around until a whistle by the referee awarded the penalty kick with 42 seconds remaining. Although Rosa guessed correctly and dove to his left, Cortez deposited a strike inside the right post for the winner.

Rosa finished with three saves in his Mitchell debut.

Mitchell (0-2-0 overall) will next host Connecticut College on Tuesday, September 7 at 4 p.m.
