Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 to Nichols

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback against Nichols College on Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

Nathan Salamon netted the game's lone goal in the 38thminute, and the Bison battled the rest of the way to make it stand. Goalkeeper Franco Barreto-Santana finished with four saves to record the clean sheet, his first of the season.

Mitchell's Joey Rosa made five stops in goal. Eduardo Tineo paced the offense with four shots and put two on goal.

Nichols capitalized on a Mitchell miscue late in the opening half to get on the scoreboard. Sitting in his own defensive end, a Mariner defender played a backwards pass to the top of his own 18-yard box. Nichol's Axel Areiza-Betancur hustled in to get a foot on the ball and deflected it along the edge of the box, where Salamon got an open look and snapped a shot inside the left post. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.

Following the halftime intermission, the Mariners had a few good chances for the equalizer but couldn't get anything past Barreto-Santana. Nichols improved to 2-1-0 overall with the victory.

Mitchell (0-3-1 overall) will next play at Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, September 14 at 4 p.m.
