Late Goals Sink Men's Soccer at JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Mitchell College men's soccer team saw a one-goal lead disappear in the final 8:46 of a 2-1 loss at Johnson & Wales University on Monday night at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Complex.

Mason Rubino netted his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute to give the visitors the advantage. The Mariners protected the lead until Kevin Reilly scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute. Just 4:33 later, JP Rioux pocketed the go-ahead score to put the Wildcats on top for good.

Mitchell goalkeeper Joey Rosa faced 24 shots and made four saves. Declan Caster made one stop against six shots for JWU.

Mitchell got on the scoreboard midway through the first half with a goal from Rubino, who was played on a through pass over the top that fell to him from Eduardo Tineo. Rubino toe poked a shot past the keeper to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead, which they carried into the halftime break. Johnson & Wales had opportunities inside the box in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Wildcats applied pressure throughout the second half, pushing for the game-tying goal. The equalizer came when Reilly sent in a cross that skipped through the box and nestled into the back corner of the net, knotting the game at 1-1. Minutes later, Rioux latched onto an Alexander Pane cross and headed into the near post side netting, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead that they carried to the final whistle.

The Mariners (0-5-1 overall) will next host Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, September 22 at 4 p.m.
