Men's Soccer Hang On for First Victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's soccer team withstood a late attack by Worcester State on Thursday afternoon, winning their first game of the season, a 3-2 final. The game was also the first victory at Mitchell for new head coach Cam Pilger, who was hired to take over the program this past summer.

The Mariners found the back of the net three times in the first half, with Dylan Lucey, Nick Ghirardi, and Christian Barrales giving the home team an early advantage. Matt Ladd and Nolan Clack assisted on the goals, two coming from Ladd.

Nate Lewos and Alexander Papageorgiou tallied goals in the second half to get the Lancers within one, but the strong defensive play of the Mariners withstood the charge of the opposition.

Dylan Kinsella, who played nearly the entire game in net after Joey Rosa left with an injury registered seven saves.

Mitchell (1-3-0) will look to make it two wins in a row when they host Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, September 14.
