Men's Soccer Down Anna Maria at Home

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's soccer team won for the second time in their last three games on Saturday afternoon at home, outlasting Anna Maria 2-1 in non-conference action.

Dylan Lucey and Noslin Antunez each netted a goal for the Mariners, who bounced back from a 1-0 loss on Wednesday against Eastern Connecticut State University.

The Mariners wasted little time getting on the board, as Lucey scored off an assist by Jeremy Gibbs in the seventh minute of the game. The goal was the second of the season for Lucey and the first collegiate assist for Gibbs. The AMCATS were able to knot the score shortly before halftime, when Hezekiah Adeyeye beat the Mitchell defense for his second goal of the season, tying the team lead.

The second half began with the score tied 1-1, and strong defense by both clubs would keep the it there until the 77th minute when Noslin Antunez put the Mariners back ahead for good. Working out of a throw in, Matt Ladd dropped the ball at the top of the Anna Maria goalie box, where it hit off the head of an AMCATS player. Antunez capitalized by striking the ball with his right foot before it hit the ground, sailing it into the right corner of the goal past the Anna Maria keeper. The goal was the first of the season for the Mitchell sophomore.

The Mariners defense held tough the remainder of the game, battling off a late attack by the AMCATS to seal the win.

Dylan Kinsella made four saves in net for Mitchell, while Anna Maria goalie Valter Santiago had six saves. Both teams registered six corner kicks, yet neither could capitalize off the opportunities.

The victory concluded a three game homestand for the Mariners, in which they went 2-1 (3-2 victory over Worcester State, 1-0 loss to ECSU, 2-1 victory over Anna Maria). They will now prepare for back to back road games, traveling on Wednesday, September 21st to Coast Guard Academy, then visiting Nichols on Monday, September 26th
