Delacruz Named GNAC Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – Mitchell College freshman Gianmarco Delacruz (East Hartford, Conn.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week for the sport of men's soccer, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.

The first year player a strong week for the Mitchell College men's soccer team, who posted a 1-1 record on the week in conference play. Delacruz netted his second goal of the season in a physical 2-1 victory over Emmanuel on Saturday. Facing the Saints, Flavio Alvarado (New London, Conn.) intercepted a pass near the center circle and turned on the offensive attack. The sophomore repositioned and delivered a perfect pass to a streaking Delacuz down the far side. Delacruz ran with it, made his defender miss, and delivered a kick with his left foot, booting the ball right into the top right corner of the goal. The goal proved to be key, as Emmanuel would score early in the second half to make it 2-1, but the Mariners held on to improve their record to 2-1-1 in GNAC play.

The Mariners (2-1-2, 2-1-1 GNAC) return to conference play on Tuesday, September 19, when they host the University of Saint Joseph at 4:00 pm.
