Tennis Sweeps Past Lesley


CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team topped Lesley University by a 9-0 final in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Friday night at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols.

With the win, the Mariners improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-1 in NECC play. The Lynx fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The first doubles tandem of Graham Cavanaugh and Zachary Simmons topped Lesley's Aqib Shah and Harrison Sidell by an 8-0 score. Freshmen Orson Sinclair and Adam Diaz took the victory in the second doubles flight with an 8-2 decision over Billy Baker and Chris Hunt. The Mariners completed the doubles sweep when juniors Chris McKeon and Michael Edwards defeated Jack Tortorici and Trevor Martin, 8-4.

Cavanaugh and Simmons kept their momentum moving to start the singles portion of the night, as they both took 6-0, 6-0 wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, respectively. Sinclair joined Simmons and Cavanaugh with a 6-0, 6-0 victory of his own in No. 4 singles over Baker.

In the No. 3 singles match, Diaz took a 6-0 first set before retiring Martin 6-2 in the second set. Senior Randy Coons topped Tyler Armstrong 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles, and sophomore Michael Berman completed the 9-0 sweep for the Mariners when he defeated Tortorici 6-3, 6-0.

Mitchell will next host Regis College on Tuesday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m.
