XC Hosts Mitchell Invitational


WATERFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's and women's cross country teams each claimed victories at the 2013 Mitchell Invitational on Friday afternoon at Stenger Farm Park.

The Conn College men placed eight runners in the top 10 and finished with a total of 18 points, besting Post University (47), Mitchell College (73) and Albertus Magnus College (120). On the women's side, Conn College finished with 15 points ahead of both Mitchell (50) and Albertus Magnus (75).

Conn's Michael Joyce was the winner of the men's race, clocking in with a time of 24:54.3 over the 7,205-meter course. John Ducham was the top finisher for Post and crossed the line in third place at 26:13.7. Mitchell's Drew Castagna and Albertus' Castel Jean-Francois led their squads with times of 28:34.2 and 35:40.8, respectively.

Conn College entered 21 runners in the women's field and had the first 13 finishers, led by Heather Rochford in a time of 20:33.1. Teammate Anna Guay was right behind her after covering the 4,852-meter course in 20:38.1. Veronica Blekis clocked in at 22:15.7 to lead Post while Mitchell's Sheilah Newcity and Albertus' Lianna Carrero led their teams with times of 23:51.7 and 26:55.3, respectively.
