Newcity, Daniel Lead XC at NECC Championship

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Mitchell College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2013 NECC Championship on Saturday morning at Stanley Park.

The Mitchell men placed third out of seven teams while the women finished fourth out of seven. Sophomores Spencer Daniel and Sheilah Newcity led their respective teams and each finished in 10th place overall, good enough to earn NECC All-Conference Second Team honors for each.

Lesley's women claimed three of the first four places and sported five of the top eight finishers in the five-kilometer race, compiling a team score of 22 points, comfortably ahead of Elms College, which tallied 66 points en route to a second place finish. Regis College finished third with 75 points, while Mitchell (102 points), Southern Vermont College (127 points), Bay Path College (149 points) and Newbury College (170 points) rounded out the field.

In the men's eight-kilometer race, Lesley achieved a near perfect team score of 16 with its top five runners taking first through fourth place and sixth place. Southern Vermont finished as runner-up with a team score of 65, placing its top five runners in the top 20. Mitchell was third with a team score of 72, while newcomer Regis College placed fourth with 87 points by placing two runners in the top 10. Newbury rounded out the team scoring with 151 points in sixth place. Daniel Webster College, the only other men's team to win a championship cup back in 2008, did not receive a team score.
