XC's Mateo Nabs NECC Rookie Honors

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Mitchell College freshman John Mateo was named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the sport of men's cross country, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.

Mateo made his collegiate debut with a top-ten finish at the Elms Invitational last week. He covered the 8K course in a time of 31:37.9 and placed 10th in the field of 53 runners. He paced the Mariners and was also the first NECC rookie to cross the finish line.

It marked the second straight week that a Mitchell newcomer has earned conference honors. Mateo and Evan Carney, who was recognized by the conference last week, are the first Mitchell teammates to earn rookie of the week honors in the same season.

Mitchell will next compete at the Blue Jay Invitational on Saturday, September 28.
