Sailing Hosts Second Annual Thames River Cup Regatta

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Mitchell College hosted the Second Annual Thames River Cup Regatta on Thursday off the docks of the Mitchell Sailing Center.

Four teams competed in the event, which was delayed initially by a thunderstorm that passed through the area. The teams then hit the water for a series of six races that had both big wind gusts and frustratingly light winds, with shifts left and right abounding.

Coast Guard beat out defending champion Connecticut College to win the event. The contest came down to a winner-take-all showdown in the day's final race. Coast Guard finished with eight points and four first-place finishes while Conn College had 10 points and a pair of first-place finishes. The University of Connecticut finished in third place with 18 points while Mitchell placed fourth with 24 points.

After the races the teams were treated to a feast put on by Mitchell Athletics and the families of the Mitchell sailing team. The sailors had equally as much fun sailing as they did eating and socializing with their Thames River colleagues.
