Sailing Finishes Fifth at Tyrell Trophy

GROTON, Conn. - Mitchell College finished fifth out of eight teams at Sunday's Tyrell Trophy, an event hosted by UConn at Avery Point.

As defending champions of the Tyrell Trophy, Mitchell came into the event with high hopes. The Lark is a unique sailing dinghy that makes for interesting sailing particular in heavier air.

With light winds from 5-10 mph throughout the much of the day, Brendan Griffiths and Alexandra Bollella sailed consistently, but were not able to break the top five. With the wind increasing, Jared LaFosse-Baker sailed the afternoon with Griffiths.

Alex Hering and Chelsea Abbenante managed a few top-five finishes as well. In the last five races, the wind suddenly rose up around 15-20 mph, and the Mitchell team broke out. In those last five races, Hering and Abbenante had finishes of fourth, second and first.

Griffiths ended the day finishing seventh overall in A-division while Hering placed second in B-Division.

As has been the trend all season, the Mariners sailed well in the heavy air but were inconsistent in the light air.
