Coach's Corner for April 1

Above you will find the full scores of our first regatta of the 2013 season.
This winter we lost two great skippers due to transfer in Brendan Griffiths and Joslin Taber. With Alex Hering skippering in his last semester as a Mitchell Mariner, the team now looked to junior Mike D'Amico to take over the helm as our new B skipper.
Sailing up at Salve Regina in the Southern Series 1 regatta, we saw every level of wind this past weekend. We finished 13th out of 16 teams. Alex Hering and Chelsea Abbenante/ Alexandra Bollella finished 12th out of 16, and Mike D'Amico and Jared LaFosse-Baker finished 13th out of 16 teams.
Saturday greeted the 16 registered teams with 40 degree weather and winds steady in the 20s and gusts over 35 mph. We sailed one set in each division. Alex H and Chelsea A sailed well in the conditions but had to abandon their second race when Chelsea went overboard and hit the frigid waters, only to be greeted with frigid winds when she got back in the boat. Mike D and Jared LF-B decided it was best to sit their race out.
Sunday greeted the team with 10-15 mph winds and we had great starts in both divisions, but with the fleet so evenly matched, a little mistake was easily magnified. As the day continued, the breeze lightened until it was 0-5 in the afternoon. Alex H and Alex B sailed in the lighter breeze and ended their day with a 4, 6 out of the 14 boats racing. Mike and Jared ended their day with a 12, 13 -- their best set of the weekend.
All in all, we showed we can stay with all of the teams there, but we need to practice more than the one day we were able to before this regatta. This solid showing in this event bodes well for even greater success as we move forward through the season.
I am very pleased with our efforts and positive attitude to the start of our spring season.
