Softball Splits with Lyndon State


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team split a doubleheader against Lyndon State College on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 in extra innings in the first game before holding on for a 14-13 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Lyndon State 4, Mitchell 2 (8 innings)

Lyndon State (3-1 overall) plated a pair of runs in extra innings to win its third straight game of the season. The Hornets took the lead on an RBI double by Natalia Shams and added an insurance run on a ground out by Tia Billado. Meghan Gadapee then retired the Mariners in order in the bottom of the eighth to improve to 3-0 on the season inside the circle.

Mitchell (3-9 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the third when junior Brittany Zaccaria singled home a pair of runs. The Hornets tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth thanks to RBI doubles from Mary Gagne and Billado.

Gadapee (3-0 overall) threw 8.0 innings and allowed two runs on 10 hits while striking out six. Mitchell starter Marissa Thomas allowed four runs on five hits over 8.0 innings and struck out six.

Game 2 – Mitchell 14, Lyndon State 13

Mitchell needed every one of its season-high 14 runs to pull out the victory in the second game. The lead changed hands five times in the contest, with the Mariners overcoming a 10-7 deficit with a seven-run sixth inning. Lyndon State rallied for three runs in the seventh and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position before Thomas worked out of the jam.

Freshman Tricia Tomaselli picked up her first collegiate win in relief, allowing 11 runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. Thomas, who made the start and also pitched the final frame, nailed down her first save of the season.

Kelly Butler went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and scored three times for the Hornets. Sophomore Tiffany Person (Waterbury, Conn./Crosby) went 1-for-3 with three RBI and hit her first career home run—a two run shot in the third—to pace the Mariners.

Gadapee made the start for Lyndon State and gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings. Butler, who came in and pitched the sixth inning, took the loss. She surrendered seven runs (one earned) on three hits.

Mitchell will next host a doubleheader against Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday, March 30 at 3 p.m.
