Softball Clipped Twice on Final Day at Snowbird

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Mitchell College softball team came up on the short end of a pair of one-run games on the final day at the Snowbird Tournament, falling 4-3 to SUNYIT and 6-5 to Norwich University on Wednesday.

The Mariners finally got their bats going, combining for 21 hits on the day. Senior Tiffany Person and sophomore Dylan Riccardi each had four hits in the doubleheader while senior Meghan Burke and freshman Alexandra Blanchette had three apiece.

Mitchell returns home and will open conference play against Regis College on Friday, March 22 at 3 p.m.

Game 1 - SUNYIT 4, Mitchell 3

Mitchell gave up two runs to start the game but immediately answered with three in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Lindsey Romagnino drove in the first two runs with a double to center field and later scored the third run on a sacrifice fly by Riccardi.

Neither team scored over the next five innings, but SUNYIT pulled ahead in the seventh on a two-run homer. The Mariners put the tying run on base in the bottom of the frame but couldn't bring it home.

Freshman Kaisea Caramante turned in her best pitching performance of the spring, allowing three runs (one earned) on only two hits through 6.1 innings. She left the game with the lead and was in line for the win, but the late home run foiled the attempt for her first career win.

Game 2 - Norwich 6, Mitchell 5

The Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a ground out by Romagnino that plated Blanchette and an RBI single from Riccardi that scored Person. Norwich then got runs back in the second and fourth innings to tie things up at 2-2.

Mitchell scored a pair of runs in the fifth behind RBI singles from Burke and junior Ariel Hallisey, but the Cadets responded with three runs in the home half to take a 5-4 lead. The Mariners tied the game in the sixth when Burke drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Norwich pulled ahead once again with a run in the sixth to go up 6-5. Mitchell had a chance to tie in the seventh thanks to a one-out double by freshman Shannon O'Neil, but the Cadets escaped the jam by retiring the next two batters.

Junior Tricia Tomaselli took the ball in the circle and yielded six runs (three earned) on 12 hits in 6.0 innings.
