Softball Loses Twice to Johnson & Wales

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team lost by final scores of 10-2 and 9-3 to Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

In the first game, Tayla Gardner went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Wildcats (6-10 overall) at the plate. Taylor Cwalinski took the ball in the circle for JWU and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out seven in 6.0 innings.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a two-run single by Gardner. JWU then added four runs in the second—highlighted by an RBI triple by Cynthia Proby—to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Mitchell got a pair of runs back in the third. Sophomore Lindsey Romagnino plated the first run with a single up the middle and then scored on a triple to left by classmate Dylan Riccardi.

Cwalinski gave up only one more hit over the final three innings while her teammates plated four more runs to invoke the eight-run mercy rule.

In the second game, Gardner struck out 14 batters en route to her fourth win of the season. She gave up three runs (two earned) over 7.0 innings and didn't walk a batter. On the offensive side, Cwalinski went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the Wildcats. Romagnino finished with a pair of doubles and drove in two to pace the Mariners.

JWU scored four runs in the second inning and never looked back. Jessica George and Cwalinski each had two-run doubles in the frame to fuel the offense. The Wildcats then extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth on an RBI single to right by Cwalinski.

Mitchell capitalized on three errors in the sixth to score three runs and pull back into the game. Romagnino came through with a two-run double in the frame while Riccardi brought home a run with a single to right.

The Wildcats put a halt to any thought of a comeback by plating four runs in the seventh. Gardner and Emma Rivera each had RBI singles in the rally as JWU extended the lead to 9-3.

Mitchell will next host Lesley University on Saturday, March 30 at noon. Johnson & Wales returns to action at the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
