NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph picked up 10-0 and 3-0 victories over Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
Saint Joseph held the Mariners to only five hits on the day. Amaria Sharon tossed a one-hitter in the opener and struck out 11, and in the nightcap Alessandra Milardo scattered four hits and fanned seven to pick up the shutout.
Mitchell (8-12 overall) will next play at Lesley University on Saturday, April 14 at 5 p.m. Saint Joseph (12-8 overall) returns to action at home against Norwich University on Thursday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
Game 1 – Saint Joseph 10, Mitchell 0
Mitchell's lone hit came from Italia Krick in the first inning. An error by Saint Joseph gave the Mariners two runners on with only one out, but Sharon escaped trouble by retiring the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning. Taylor Marino and Isabella Russo each contributed RBI singles while the final run scored on a ball put into play by Paola Bronner.
That was all the support Sharon needed, as she allowed only one baserunner after the first inning and retired the final 13 batters she faced. She improved to 5-6 with the victory.
Six players finished with a pair of hits to lead the USJ offense. Sharon, Russo and Cinthia Vega each doubled in the contest and combined for four RBI.
Game 2 – Saint Joseph 3, Mitchell 0
Hits were hard to come by in the second game as Milardo dueled with Mitchell starter Shyla Phillips-Krick. The game remained scoreless until the fifth when the Blue Jays struck for three runs. Jenai Davis led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice to put Saint Joseph up 1-0. Bronner followed with an RBI single and eventually scored the final run on a passed ball.
Milardo made the margin stand, stranding a runner in scoring position in the sixth before flirting with trouble again in the seventh. Taylor Duchesneau and Danielle Autieri each singled to bring the tying run to the plate with only one out. However, Milardo got a ground ball and a strikeout to end the game, improving her record to 7-2 on the season.
Phillips-Krick struck out five and allowed two earned runs on five hits.
