Softball Swept at Becker

LEICESTER, Mass. -- The Mitchell College softball team fell by final scores of 11-3 and 8-0 at Becker College on Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Russell Field.

Vasia Murphy went 5-for-7 with two home runs and eight RBI to lead the Hawks, who improved to 17-11 overall (9-1 NECC). Nene Capeles paced the Mariners with three hits on the day, all of which came in the opener. 

Mitchell (8-17 overall, 1-7 NECC) will next play at Eastern Nazarene College on Friday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1 - Becker 11, Mitchell 3 (6 innings)

Mitchell fell behind 2-0 in the third inning but answered back in the top of the fourth, plating a pair of runs to tie the game. The first run scored courtesy of a Becker error, and Laurissa Amaker knocked in the tying run with a ground out to second.

The Hawks scored four in the home half of the fourth to pull away. Alyssa Columb supplied a two-run double while Murphy also drove in a pair with a single to right.

Amaker picked up another RBI in the sixth with a ground out to short, but that would be Mitchell's final run of the day. Murphy hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame as the Hawks put up four more runs to end the game early.

Mitchell starter Taylor Duchesneau yielded 11 runs (10 earned) on 17 hits and struck out two.

Game 2 - Becker 8, Mitchell 0 (5 innings)

Samantha Belenchia tossed a two-hitter for Becker in the nightcap. After giving up a single in the first inning, she retired 10 straight batters before yielding another.

Madison Nicynski and Alex Lopez were the only Mariners to record a hit in the contest. Starting pitcher Suzanne Vachon gave up eight runs on 12 hits and struck out three while walking two.
