Softball Wraps Up Play at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Mitchell College softball team wrapped up play at The Spring Games with a pair of losses on Wednesday, falling 5-4 to John Jay College and 8-0 to Saint Joseph's College (Maine). 

Nene Capeles led the Mitchell offense with five hits on the day whileAlex Lopez and Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey added three hits apiece. Kacee Hirst tossed all 11.1 innings in the two games.

Mitchell (2-6 overall) will next play at Albertus Magnus on Wednesday, March 18 at 2:30 p.m.

Game 1 – John Jay 5, Mitchell 4

Mitchell claimed an early 2-0 lead as Thibodeau-Corey and Lopez each supplied RBI doubles in the first inning. The Mariners then had chances to increase the margin but left the bases loaded in the third, along with a pair of runners in scoring position in the fourth. 

John Jay, which made it a 2-1 game in the third, pulled in front behind a three-run fifth inning. Mitchell then rallied back with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, tying the game at 4-4 on a ground out by Sydney Oatway that scored Lopez.

The Bloodhounds put two on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to set up a walk-off win. Ashley Sclanfi singled to left to plate the winning run.

Hirst gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits over 6.1 innings and struck out four.

Game 2 – Saint Joseph's 8, Mitchell 0 (5 innings)

The Mariners put runners on base in every inning but failed to capitalize. The Monks had no such problems, plating a pair of runs in every inning but the second.

Capeles finished with two of Mitchell's six hits in the game, all of which went for singles. Hirst surrendered 14 hits and struck out three.
