Softball Drops Two at JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Mitchell College softball team dropped a pair of games at Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday evening, falling by final scores of 13-5 and 14-5 at the SMAC Softball Field.

Laurissa Amaker went 2-for-6 with four RBI in the doubleheader to lead the Mitchell offense. Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey also recorded a pair of hits in each game.

Mitchell (1-3 overall) returns to action against Norwich University on Saturday, March 20 at noon.

Game 1 - JWU 13, Mitchell 5 (6 innings)

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Mitchell scored three in the third to pull in front. Laurissa Amaker plated the first run with a ground ball to first, and Ismarie Marrero followed with a two-run single to make it a 3-1 game.

The Wildcats responded with five runs in the home half of the third to regain control. The Mariners cut into the deficit in the sixth behind a two-run single by Amaker to make it 7-5, but JWU pounded out six runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Mitchell starter Katelyn Lipsky took the loss, allowing seven runs (two earned) on 11 hits over 4.0 innings.

Game 2 - JWU 14, Mitchell 5 (5 innings)

The Wildcats once again jumped ahead early, scoring once in the first inning and twice more in the second. Amaker and Thibodeau-Corey each contributed RBI singles in the third to get the Mariners back in the game at 3-2, but JWU added three runs in the bottom of the frame to pad the lead.

Mitchell got a run back in the fourth on a ground out by Sarah Aviles, but JWU broke the game open with eight runs in the home half. Lipsky and Jossette Madison each plated runs for the Mariners in the fifth, but by that point the deficit was too great to make up.

Lipsky once again got the starting nod and surrendered 12 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits.
