Softball Splits with USJ on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College split a non-conference softball doubleheader against the University of Saint Joseph on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-0 in the opener before bouncing back for a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Each game was dominated by starting pitching, with USJ's Alessandra Milardo tossing a two-hit gem in the day's first contest. She allowed only two hits and struck out 11. In the second game, Mitchell's Katelyn Lipsky fanned seven en route to her second career shutout.

Mitchell (8-17 overall) returns to action at Elms College on Wednesday, May 5 at 3 p.m. Saint Joseph (12-6 overall) will next host Norwich University in the quarterfinals of the GNAC Championship on Tuesday, May 4 at 4 p.m.

Game 1 – USJ 4, Mitchell 0

Julia Annecchiarico led off the second inning with a home run to put the Blue Jays on the scoreboard. USJ clung to the 1-0 lead until Frankie Ferrante added another solo shot in the sixth. The Blue Jays added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Jenna Masiello and a ground ball by Amanda Thiel.

Mitchell's best scoring chance came in the second inning when Jenna Bennett hit a two-out double but was stranded. Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey added a single in the fifth, but that was all the Mariners could manage against Milardo.

Lipsky went the distance and struck out nine in the loss.

Game 2 – Mitchell 2, USJ 0

The Mariners manufactured a run in the second inning to jump on top early. Laurissa Amaker led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah AvilesMadison Nicynski then brought Amaker home with a two-out single to right for Mitchell's first run of the day.

Amaker made it 2-0 in the third with an RBI double to left. That would be more than enough for Lipsky, who escaped a tough spot in the sixth to strand a runner at third. She then pitched around a two-out double in the seventh to complete the shutout and earn her seventh win of the season.

Annecchiarico made the start for the Blue Jays and pitched well, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out eight.

Prior to the games, the Mariners honored three seniors in a special ceremony. Amaker, Thibodeau-Corey and Maliah Pabellon were all four-year letterwinners for the Mariners.
