Softball Comes Up Short

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped a pair of games at The Spring Games on Monday, falling 5-1 to Otterbein University and 8-0 to Wheaton (IL) College.

The Mariners pounded out eight hits—including three doubles—in the opener but managed only one run. In the second game, Mitchell finished with just two hits and was shut out for the first time this season.

Mitchell (2-4 overall) will take a day off before returning to action at The Spring Games on Wednesday, March 9 against Penn State Berks and Ohio Wesleyan University.

Game 1 – Otterbein 5, Mitchell 1

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Mitchell answered back with a run in the third to tie the game. A one-out double by Gemma Landry set the table, and Jenna Bennett followed with a single to left to plate the run.

The Cardinals went through the entire batting order in the bottom of the fourth and pushed across four runs on four hits. A two-run single by Isa Lewis capped the scoring and left Otterbein with a 5-1 lead.

Bryn Grabows struck out seven to earn the win for Otterbein, which improved to 1-1. Katelyn Lipsky yielded five runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out a season-high nine batters while walking six.

Game 2 – Wheaton 8, Mitchell 0 (6 innings)

Wheaton scored the only run it would need in the top of the first inning. However, the Thunder added three runs in the second, two in the fourth and two more in the sixth to end the game early via the eight-run rule.

Madison Nicynski singled up the middle in the bottom of the third for Mitchell's first hit. Brooke Whitmarsh later supplied a leadoff double in the fifth but was stranded at second base.

Emily Reynolds made the start in the circle and gave up four runs on seven hits before turning the ball over to Hailey Hill. Hill yielded four runs (two earned) on nine hits over 4.0 frames.
