Softball's Streak Snapped at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped a doubleheader at Trinity College on Tuesday afternoon, falling by final scores of 2-1 and 11-6 at Trinity Field.

In the opener, Mitchell tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on a leadoff home run by Brooke Whitmarsh. The Bantams countered with three hits in the bottom of the frame to walk off with the win.

The Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap but couldn't hold on. Trinity tied the game with a four-run second inning, ultimately scoring 11 straight runs to seize control of the game.

The losses snapped a six-game winning streak as the Mariners fell to 10-8 on the season.

Mitchell will next host Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m.

Game 1 – Trinity 2, Mitchell 1

Mitchell fell into a 1-0 hole after yielding a run in the first inning on a pair of walks, a steal and a wild pitch. The deficit proved hard to overcome, as Trinity starter Jordan Stephan allowed only three hits and didn't allow a runner past first base over the first six frames.

The Mariners finally broke through on the first pitch of the seventh, as Whitmarsh crushed a ball over the fence in left to tie the game with her second career homer. In the home half, a leadoff double by Gianna Tito put the winning run on base for Trinity, and two batters later the game ended on a walk-off single by Erin Steed.

Mitchell starter Kaitlyn Lipsky turned in another quality performance but was saddled with the loss. She pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits and struck out nine. Stephan fanned seven in the win and gave up only the one run on four hits over 7.0 innings.

Game 2 – Trinity 11, Mitchell 6

The Mariners got off to a good start in the second game, plating a pair of runs in the first inning thanks to a ground out by Whitmarsh and an RBI single by Alex Lopez. Mitchell then extended the lead to 4-0 in the second behind an RBI double by Emily Reynolds and a sacrifice fly by Gemma Landry.

Trinity tied the game with four runs in the second and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Bantams added five more runs before Mitchell plated two in the seventh on a two-run double by Sarah Aviles.

Reynolds took the loss in the circle, yielding eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits over 4.1 innings. Ragan Miller made her first relief appearance of the season and tossed 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
