Softball Sweeps on Second Day in Florida

NAPLES, Fla. – The Mitchell College softball team swept their doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Collegiate on Sunday afternoon, defeating SUNY Delhi 9-0 and SUNY Brockport 5-4.

The Mariners got solid starting pitching performances from both Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) and Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.). Lipsky yielded just two hits and struck out 10 across five innings, earning the win against Delhi, while Reynolds tossed five innings of two run ball to secure the sweep against Brockport.

The Mariners (2-2 overall) will be off on Monday before resuming their Florida tilt on Tuesday, March 14, with games against Crown College and Rutgers University–Newark.

Game 1 – Mitchell 9, SUNY Delhi 0

The Mariners dominated in their Sunday opener, securing their first victory of the season with a five run third inning and a four run fourth inning. Madison Nicynski (Warwick, R.I.) provided the offensive spark, going 3-3 with a double, four RBI, and two runs scored. Junior Katelyn Lipsky was dominant in the circle, notching her first win of the season after tossing five shutout innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out 10. Sarah Aviles (Griswold, Conn.) and Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.) also registered multi-hit games for the Mariners, who pounded out 12 hits on the way to a five inning victory due to the mercy rule.

Game 2 – Mitchell 5, SUNY Brockport 4

Emily Reynolds got the start in the circle for the Mariners, and kept the Brockport bats at bay during the second game of Mitchell's Sunday doubleheader. The sophomore tossed five innings of two run ball, while Brooke Whitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Sarah Aviles each drove in a pair of runs.  The Mariners carried a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, before the Golden Eagles got a pair of singles and took advantage of a Mitchell error to make it a one run game. However, Hailey Hill (Griswold, Conn.), who came on in releief of Reynolds, was able to get Hailey Burdick to pop up to end the game, as the Mariners completed their first sweep of the season.
