Softball Swept at Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. - The Mitchell College softball team dropped a doubleheader at Nichols College on Wednesday afternoon, falling by final scores of 3-1 and 5-2 in non-conference action.

In the opener, a two run fifth inning proved costly for the Mariners, as Nichols broke open a tie game and held on for the victory. Starting pitcher Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) picked up just her second loss of the season, tossing six innings of three run ball, striking out four.

The Bison opened up a four run lead in the fourth inning of the second game and were able to hang on despite the Mariners plating two runs in the top of the sixth. Mitchell starter Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) took the loss after giving up four earned runs in four and two third innings, while Laney Martin was the winning pitcher for Nichols, throwing five innings of two run ball.

The Mariners (9-5 overall) return to action on Saturday, April 1, when they open conference play against Eastern Nazarene College.

Game 1 – Nichols 3, Mitchell 1

The Mariners got on the board early when Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.) collected an RBI groundout in the top of the first inning. The Bison then tied it in the bottom of the fourth, before jumping ahead for good in the fifth when Emily Iannuccilli and Allie Brown each drove in runs.

Sarah Aviles (Griswold, Conn.) doubled to power the Mitchell offense, and came around to score their lone run of the game.

Game 2 – Nichols 5, Mitchell 2

The second game was a pitcher's duel early on, with Emily Reynolds and Martin each working four scoreless innings. The Bison finally got to Reynolds in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs highlighted by an RBI single Mackenzie Jackson and a two run home run off the bat of Erin Gour.

The Mariners answered with two runs in the top of the sixth, however Alyssa Ouellette and Olivia Pedro combined for two scoreless innings in relief.

Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) paced the Mariners at the plate, finishing 2-4 with one RBI.

Mitchell (9-5 overall) will host Eastern Nazarene College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 1.
