Softball Caps Dominant Weekend with Sweep of NEC

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team wrapped up a dominant weekend of conference play by sweeping a home doubleheader against New England College on Sunday, taking the first game 8-4 and the nightcap 9-1.

The Mariners got excellent pitching for the second day in a row, as Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) tossed a seven-inning complete game in the opener, allowing just two earned runs while striking out four. Sophomore Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) took to the circle in game two and delivered, working a six-inning complete game, surrendering just four hits on the way to her sixth victory of the season.

The Mariners (16-12 overall, 7-1 NECC) will return to action on Tuesday, April 18, when they host Roger Williams University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm.

Game 1 – Mitchell 8, NEC 4

Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H.) gave the Mariners an early lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. A three run second inning saw Mitchell take control, and despite three runs by the Pilgrims in the fifth, an RBI single by Brooke WHitmarsh (Portsmouth, R.I) and an NEC miscue allowed the Mariners to carry an 8-3 edge into the sixth.

An RBI triple off the bat of Jasmin Alvarado made it 8-4 in the seventh, but Lipsky locked in and secured the victory.

LaBreck, Whitmarsh, Gemma Landry (Lewiston, M.E.), Brooke Taylor (Montville, Conn.) Lola Worsdale (Stonington, Conn.) and Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.) all had multiple hits for Mitchell. Bennett finished 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Whitmarsh drove in a team—high two runs.

Game 2 – Mitchell 9, NEC 1

Emma Lopez gave the Pilgrims an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. After plating one run in the bottom half of the inning, Madison Nicynski (Warwick, R.I.) gave the home squad their first lead in the third with an RBI single up the middle.

Mitchell added four runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Reynolds and Landry each collected RBI singles, before Hannah Lemke (East Haddam, Conn.) ended things with a single to second base in the bottom of the sixth inning. Whitmarsh finished 3-4 with a double and three runs scored.

Olivia Olson took the loss for NEC, allowing six runs and 11 hits in four innings, while Grace Giesler led the offense with two hits.
