Albertus Sweeps Twin Bill Against Softball

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Albertus Magnus College on Thursday afternoon, coming up short 5-4 in the opener before falling 5-0 in the nightcap.

The Falcons tagged Mitchell junior Katelyn Lipsky (Plantsville, Conn.) for five runs across the first three innings of the opener. Hailey Hill (Griswold, Conn.) came out of the bullpen to toss three shutout innings, but the Mariner bats came up just short during a seventh inning rally.

The second game was a duel between Mitchell's Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) and Annabelle Jabs of Albertus Magnus, as the two starters matched each other by delivering four scoreless frames each. The Falcons came alive late however, scoring five runs off Reynolds in the final three innings while Jabs secured the shutout.

The Mariners (17-15 overall, 7-1 NECC) will return to New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday, April 22, when they host Lesley University in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.

Game 1 – Albertus 5, Mitchell 4

The Falcons flew out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Mitchell starter Katelyn Lipsky. Peyton Davis doubled in the bottom of the second to make it a 4-0 game, before Angelina Ramada laced an RBI single down the left field line in the fourth, giving the home team a 5-0 edge.

Mitchell sophomore Gemma Landry (Lewiston, M.E.) got one back in the fifth, hitting an RBI single into left field, yet the score remained 5-1 heading into the final frame. After Lola Worsdale (Stonington, Conn.) grounded out to kick off the seventh inning, Olivia DeCicco (Haverhill, Mass.) single, Hannah Lemke (East Haddam, Conn.) walked, and Landry came through with an RBI single. Emma LaBreck (Rollinsford, N.H. ) then doubled home two runs, trimming the deficit to one, however the rally ended with a Mitchell groundout.

Landry and DeCicco led Mitchell with two hits apiece, while LaBreck went 1-3 with a double and two RBI.

Erin Dighello picked up the win for Albertus, tossing five and one third inning of three-hit ball, surrendering just one run, striking out two. Angelina Ramada went 2-3 with a pair of RBI for the Falcons.

Game 2 – Albertus 5, Mitchell 0

After Reynolds and Annabelle Jabs matched scoreless frames across the first four innings, Albertus finally broke though and took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Falcons began with back to back singles, before Angelina Ramada singled home the first run of the game and Erin Molkenthin followed with a two-run base hit to left field.

The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the sixth, as Angelina Ramada hit a two-run double into right field. The Mariners managed to get one runner on in the top of the seventh, but the afternoon ended on the base paths, as a Mitchell runner was caught stealing.

Annabelle Jabs earned the win for the Falcons, throwing seven scoreless innings, while Angelina Ramada went 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
