NEW LONDON, Conn. – Daniel Webster upset the #1 seed and tournament host Mitchell College, 81-77, in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) semifinals in front of a packed house at the Yarnall Athletic Center on the Mitchell College campus on Friday evening. Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) led the Eagles to the victory with 22 points and eight assists. Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) scored a game-high 30 points in the loss for the Mariners.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Mitchell College Mariners (16-9) took top honors as they finished tied for first place in the NECC at 14-2. The Mariners’ junior guard Jennifer Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.), a business administration major, was named the 2009 NECC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. In conference play, Iglesias averaged 17.7 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, six assists per game and 1.6 steals per game. She led the conference in steals (96) and assist/turnover ratio (1.7). Iglesias finished sixth in scoring, ninth in field goals percentage (.418), fourth in free throw percentage (.710), eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.340) and third in three-point field goals made (2.3).

ATTLEBORO, MASS. — Mitchell College junior guard Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) guided her team to the #1 seed in the NECC Women’s Basketball tournament with a phenomenal final 4-0 week of action. Iglesias started the week with a team-high 29 points in a 67-52 win over Coast Guard in non-conference action. Later in the week, the Iglesias-led Mariners defeated Bay Path 64-44 and Wheelock 65-35. In their final conference match-up against top ranked Lesley, Iglesias hammered down 20 points en-route to defeating Lesley finishing NECC play tied with a 14-2 conference record. For the four-game series, she shot 44 % (27-for-62) from the floor, 39% (11-for-28) from behind the arc and 66% (4-for-6) from the line. The junior captain is averaging 17.5 points per contest to go along with her 131 assists and 35 steals.

NEW LONDON, CONN. — Mitchell College freshman center Destiney Harris (Bristol, Conn.) averaged 18.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game taking the Mariners to a weekly 3-0 NECC sweep. She notched 17 points and 12 boards in an 85-55 win over Southern Vermont, while scoring a week-high 22 points in an 85-69 victory over Newbury. In the Mariners final game, Harris hit 16 points and 16 rebounds with an 85-50 win over Becker. Over the three-game span, Harris shot 52% (22-for-43) from the field and 69% (11-for-16) from the charity stripe.
