Mitchell Women Down Wheelock

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Mitchell women's basketball team continued their winning ways when they notched a convincing 65-35 win over Wheelock College Saturday afternoon at Pine Manor College.

The win is number eight in a row for Mitchell, who finished 13-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference. By finishing in either first second place, Mitchell receives a first round bye for the NECC playoffs, which will begin next Tuesday. They are currently tied with Lesley University, and the two teams will conclude the regular season on Sunday in a showdown at Mitchell.

Mitchell's Destiny Harris (Bristol, CT) shot a perfect 5-5 from the field, leading all scores with 17. Wheelock's Jessica Battista scored a team-high 13 points, ten of which came in the final nine minutes of play.

Mitchell wasted no time in showing why they are the number one ranked offense in the conference, using a 23-3 run to start the game. The Wildcats were plagued by an unfriendly hoop and rushed shots, managing to shoot only 16 percent from the field in the first half. Wheelock also struggled to hold on to the ball, committing 20 turnovers the first half, which turned into 25 points for the Mariners.

Though Harris was the only player in double figures for Mitchell, it was a balanced attack, with nine different players scoring at least a pair. Sophomore Brittany Smyth (Winsted, Conn.) scored seven points while netting a game-high six steals, while teammate Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, CT) also scored seven and dished out a game-high six assists.
