Strong Second Half Lifts Johnson & Wales Over WBB


NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped a 75-59 decision to Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Mitchell (0-4 overall) led 33-31 at the half but was outscored 44-26 over the final 20 minutes. Johnson & Wales (3-4 overall) shot 41 percent for the contest and went 8-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Mariners shot just 24 percent and made 5-of-27 from long range.

Morgan Wilson led three Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds to record the double-double. Allyson Dowen netted 17 points and added four assists while Alexia Ramirez also notched a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Sophomores Bianca Young and Destiney Harris each recorded double-doubles to lead the Mariners. Both finished with 16 points, with Harris adding 12 rebounds and Young grabbing 11. Freshman Kaylee Cerruto scored a career-high 15 points and was 4-of-4 from downtown.

Neither team led by more than four points in a first half that featured seven lead changes and eight ties. Mitchell didn't take its first lead until Cerruto buried her first three-pointer with 8:47 to play in the half to give the Mariners an 18-17 advantage. The lead then went back and forth until Harris snapped a 31-31 tie with a jumper with 26 seconds to go in the half.

The Wildcats opened the second half with a 15-2 run to seize control. Dowen fueled the stretch with a pair of treys and seven points while Ramirez and Wilson each added four. The run left Johnson & Wales with a 46-35 lead with 15:11 remaining, and the Wildcats never let the lead dip below eight the rest of the way.

The trio of Harris, Young and Cerruto accounted for all but 12 of Mitchell's total points. The group also shot a combined 14-of-31 from the floor as the rest of the squad went only 4-of-43. The Mariners pulled down a season-high 54 rebounds, including 23 on the offensive glass. In addition to Harris and Young, junior Allison Peck also finished with double digits in rebounds with a career-high 10.

Mitchell will next host CCNY on Tuesday, December 8 at 5 p.m. Johnson & Wales will next play at UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday, December 10 at 7 p.m.
