Women's Basketball Falls at Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team tipped off the 2010-11 season with a 73-35 defeat at Anna Maria College on Tuesday evening.

Senior Brittany Smyth and sophomore Kaylee Cerruto each scored nine points to lead the Mariners. Smyth also added six rebounds and a career-high nine steals to fuel a Mitchell defense that forced 26 turnovers and finished with 18 steals. The Mariners struggled to find a rhythm on offense, however, shooting just 20 percent from the field while going 2-for-20 from three-point range.

Anna Maria scored the first 11 points of the contest and led by double digits for the majority of the game. Samantha Ashton led three AMCATS in double figures with 19 points and also pulled down eight rebounds. Anna Maria shot just under 50 percent from the floor and went 10-for-21 from behind the arc.

Mitchell and Anna Maria will meet once again on Friday, November 19 at the Saint Joseph College Tip-Off Tournament. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
