WBB Picks Up First Win at SJC Tip-Off Tournament


WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2010-11 season by a 52-47 final over Green Mountain College on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Saint Joseph College Tip-Off Tournament.

Senior Allison Peck led the Mariners (1-2 overall) with 15 points and nine rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Classmate Alix O'Neil added eight points and nine boards while junior Bianca Young chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds.

Mitchell trailed 27-23 at the half but rallied to outscore Green Mountain 29-20 over the final 20 minutes. The Eagles knocked down the first bucket of the half to go up by six before the Mariners turned good defense into 13 unanswered points. Mitchell forced six turnovers and didn't allow a field during a near five-minute stretch that left it with a 36-29 lead with 14:27 remaining.

The Eagles battled their way back and took a 38-37 lead with 9:05 to play on a three-pointer by Chelsea Paul. The Mariners responded with a quick bucket by Young on the next possession and never trailed again. Peck hit a big three-pointer to put Mitchell up by four with 4:03 to go, and the Mariners closed out the game by going 5-for-5 from the foul line in the final two minutes.

Paul led Green Mountain with 17 points while Millicent Hopper added 16. The Eagles dropped to 0-3 overall on the season.

Mitchell will play its home opener on Tuesday, November 23 against Eastern Nazarene College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
