Conn College Tops Women's Basketball

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team suffered a 75-54 setback to cross-town rival Connecticut College on Monday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Conn College (3-6 overall) used its height and depth to dominate Mitchell inside. The Camels outscored the Mariners by a 46-18 margin in the paint and held a 52-27 edge on the glass. Tara Gabelman led the charge with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Alix O'Neil led Mitchell (4-4 overall) with 20 points and seven boards.

The Camels ran their offense through Gabelman in the early going. After a three-pointer by Aly Boyle got Conn College on the board, Gabelman scored the team's next 10 points en route to a 13-8 lead with 12:59 remaining. She would finish with 16 points in the half as the Camels led 33-25 at the break.

Conn College pushed its lead to double digits on the opening possession of the second half and led by as many as 28 points in the stanza. The Camels shot a blistering 62 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes and finished at 49 percent for the game. Caitlin Cimino finished with 10 points while Boyle and Tina Seretta added eight apiece.

Mitchell shot 30 percent for the contest and had trouble getting into the lane, settling for long jumpers and three-point attempts. The Mariners shot better from beyond the arc (38 percent) than inside of it but couldn't make up the difference. Sophomore Kaylee Cerruto also finished in double figures with 17 points and made five three-pointers.

Mitchell will enjoy an extended layoff before hosting Becker College on January 8.
