Foul Shooting Keys WBB Win at SVC


BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team won its third straight game with a 70-56 victory over Southern Vermont College on Thursday night at the MAC.

Southern Vermont fell into foul trouble which gave way to 16 points for the visiting Mariners. Sophomore Kaylee Cerruto and Southern Vermont's Joa Claircius each led all scorers with 24 points apiece.

Senior Alix O'Neil finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds while junior Bianca Young added 12 points. Mitchell improved to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the NECC while Southern Vermont dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

SVC could only muster up 22 points in the first half as the Mariners took a convincing 14-point lead into the break. The Mountaineers came out strong in the second half and matched Mitchell in scoring with 34 points.

Southern Vermont shot better from the field and also beat the Mariners on the glass. But Mitchell swung the tide by forcing 25 turnovers and sealed the win with a 16-for-19 effort from the free throw line.

The 24 points were a career high for Cerruto, who went 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and also handed out four assists. O'Neil cinched her fourth double-double of the season and fifth of her career.

Mitchell returns home to face Bay Path College on Saturday, January 15 at 3 p.m.
