WBB Falls Short at Daniel Webster

NASHUA, N.H. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 77-45 final at Daniel Webster College on Saturday afternoon at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

DWC's Allyssa Marson knocked down six three-pointers, including her first five attempts from outside in the first half, on the way to a game- and career-high 24 points. She finished 9-of-16 from the field and added two blocks and three assists. Kirsten Murphy notched 16 points with 10 in the second half as the Eagles (13-7, 9-4 NECC) remained tied for third place in the NECC standings with five league games remaining.

Alycia Gervais added 14 points for the hosts, pulling in a game-high nine rebounds. Sarah Paternostro dished out a game-best eight assists and also added eight points and two steals. Emily Travis came off the bench to record a game-high three blocks, chipping in four points and two assists, while Kacie Lang added six points and six assists.

Freshman Sheanna James paced the Mariners (5-14, 4-9 NECC) with 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Senior Bianca Young added 13 points and seven rebounds while freshman Hannah Smith chipped in with eight points.

Mitchell built an 11-6 lead early on after a Cora Harris lay-up and Young three-pointer, but DWC answered with an 11-0 run sparked by a trey from Marson and a Murphy lay-up. Daniel Webster, which closed the half on a 15-5 run over the final 7:30, never trailed the rest of the game.

The Eagles led 38-23 at the half and opened the second with a 9-2 run on jumpers from Paternostro, Gervais, and Murphy, followed by a three from Lang to push the lead to 20 (47-27) with five minutes gone. DWC would stretch the lead to 25 with five minutes remaining while holding the Mariners to six second-half field goals.

DWC finished with a 48-33 advantage on the glass, 38-10 scoring in the paint, and turned 20 Mariner turnovers into 26 points.

Mitchell next visits NECC foe Lesley University on Tuesday, February 7 for an 8:00 p.m. tilt.
